Artist's statement
The best way to describe my work is as follows: "Almost Figurative Layered Collage".
While the subject matter of my images varies quite a bit, (flowers, androids, architecture, still life, fish) the elements that are always present are dynamic and energetic colour, together with the use of layers, and the juxtaposition of disparate elements (figurative abstract, smooth or highly textured, etc). Thus, while the surface of the majority of my paintings is smooth, the transparency of the layers constitutes a strong and warm invitation to look beyond and to experience my art in greater depth. My work speaks about the fact that what appears on the surface is not really all there is. In my compositions I use colour to create the mood, light to unify.
Technically, my paintings are mostly mixed media. I often start with watercolor and collage and then add layers of transparent glacis. The elements of which the images are composed are a mix of the abstract and figurative. This results in an image that is neither purely abstract nor essentially realistic.
For much of my "virtual work" I begin with a number of images derived from my paintings, and filter and layer these together before applying further systemic modifications.
